Bouncerate optimalisatie d.m.v. blokkeren Google Analytics referrer spam
In de afgelopen jaren heb ik het al meerdere malen mogen meemaken : Google Analytics referrer spam. Mijn vermoeden is dat het een slechte invloed heeft op de rankings in Google. Immers, hoge bouncerates zou Google de indruk kunnen geven dat de webpagina niet geschikt is voor de bezoekers. Erg vervelend, bovendien verstoord het de interpretatie van de webstatistieken. In dit artikel leg ik kort uit wat Google Analytics Referrer Spam is, hoe je het kan herkennen, hoe je het kan tegengaan en waarom je dat zou moeten doen.
Wat is Google Analytics referrer spam?
Referrer spam is bedoeld om webmasters, designers, marketeers zoals jij en ik, websites laten te bezoeken die als bron zijn aangemeld in de statistieken. Je kan je voorstellen dat als bedrijven dit soort methodes hanteren om verkeer te genereren naar hun eigen website de intenties meestal niet zuiver zijn. Kortom, ga dus niet naar dit soort websites toe. Je weet nooit wat voor een troep je daar kan aantreffen.
Er zijn tientallen Referrer Spammers actief. Wat ze doen is Google Analytics de indruk geven dat jouw website is bezocht (terwijl dat eigenlijk niet waar is). Hier hebben ze scripts voor actief. De bezoekersaantallen kunnen oplopen tot 1000en per dag. Ik heb dit al een keer eerder meegemaakt op Boardsportwinkel.com. De bezoekersaantallen stegen zeer snel. De champagne was al open, maar bij nadere inspectie bleek dat het allemaal “bogus” verkeer was. Resultaat : hoge bouncerates en verkeer uit hoeken van de wereld die niets met skateboarden of snowboarden te maken hadden. Jammer!
Hoe herken je het?
Zie jij in je bezoekers Google Analytics onder “Acquisitie > Alle Verkeer > Kanalen” bronnen als Buttons-for-websites.com, Social-buttons.com, Semalt.com, Best-Seo-Solution.com, Simple-Share-Buttons.com? Dan ben ook jij het slachtoffer van deze refferer spam. Je herkent ook gelijk de hoge bouncerates en de lage tijd dat men op de website blijft. Herkenbaar? Dan leg ik je graag uit waarom je dit wil aanpakken.
Waarom aanpakken?
Als je het mij vraagt heeft dit soort spam een tweetal grote nadelen : serverbelasting, verstoorde statistieken en hoge bouncerates. Om de servercapaciteit zo goed mogelijk te benutten is het niet handig en effectief als er bogus verkeer op je website komt. Dat wil je niet. Je houdt liever je resources beschikbaar voor “echte” bezoekers. Voor een individuele website heeft dit misschien niet zo’n grote impact maar op het moment dat je meerdere websites host op één server kan het zeker beginnen aan te tikken. Blokkeren die boel dus.
Wanneer je serieus bezig bent met je website wil je weten wat de effecten zijn geweest van bepaalde aanpassingen en acties. Ook probeer je je conversie te optimaliseren. Wanneer je vreemd verkeer krijgt dat gelijk weer weg is verstoord die alle cijfers die je hebt : bezoekersaantallen, bouncerates en conversie ratio’s. Kortom, opschonen om zuivere data te krijgen is zeker een goed advies. Of je moet “bezoekersaantallen” verkopen natuurlijk, maar ook dan, beter eerlijk en zuiver verkeer dan onzin. Toch?
De laatste, de bouncerate, ligt wat meer in het SEO stuk. Ik en vele anderen vermoeden dat de bouncerate van invloed is op de SERP (positie in de organische zoekresultaten). Een hoge bouncerate zou Google kunnen interpreteren als slechte content. Dit zou dus kunnen betekenen dat als de Google Analytics Refferer Spam zorgt voor een hogere bouncerate de posities in de zoekmachine naar beneden worden gehaald. Ook dit wil je niet. Dus nogmaals, blokkeren die handel!
Blokkeren van referrer spam met .htaccess
Voeg de volgende code toe aan je .htaccess en je bent ready to go! Easy does it. Als je nog meer rare websites ziet die je negatief beinvloeden dan kan je die altijd toevoegen. Het blijft een beetje water naar de zee dragen maar beter iets dan niets in deze.
